International Peace Organizations Held a Peace Walk for Promoting a Culture of Peace
( June 5, 2017, Thimphu, Sri Lanka Guardian) Efforts peacebuilding to promote a culture of peace and stability that overcome threats of violence were underway in association with international NGOs and local community in Bhutan.
On June 2nd, a peace walk campaign with the title of “Peace Awakening Event” was co-hosted by Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL), International Peace Youth Group (IPYG), and Yangchenphug School. For empowerment of civic awareness and participation in endorsement of peace in the country and local community, 1,500 local students and members of the school participated in this event.
Thinley Zam, a student of Yangchenphug School, stressed on the attitude of youths who want to achieve peace. He said, “There are many ways to achieve peace, but first we should think about what will practically achieve peace with our mind and heart. Achieving peace is all about practicing the ways of good values.” Another student participant, Sonam Deki, shared the impression of the event by saying, “It was a very fun and memorable day for all of us including myself to have a chance to think about the need of peace. We’ve learned that peace work has to start from ourselves and then to others”.
In this year, HWPL and IPYG devised a global peace project with the theme of “Talk & Walk to Prevent Violent Extremism for the purpose of creating an environment of the role of civil society in contribution to peacebuilding. The two organizations plan seminars and educational programs to further develop the peace project in cooperation with local schools.
The ‘Peace Walk Campaign’ traces back to 2013 when the Declaration of World Peace drafted by HWPL with a slogan of ‘Leave peace as a legacy to future generations’. At 85 cities in 43 countries including Beijing, New York, Paris, Seoul, Sydney, and Tokyo on May 25th, HWPL under the United Nations Department of Public Information (UN DPI), co-hosted a peace culture campaign with local communities and international youth associations. In this year, the annual event has been held since May 19th.
