HWPL Holds Online Climate Action Gathering With New Zealand Environmental Activists and Youth Leaders
On September 12th, the HWPL Global 06 branch hosted an online climate action gathering. Environmental activists, youth representatives, and climate environmental groups from New Zealand discussed ways for the country and its citizens to concretely address climate change.
Today, climate change poses a serious threat to many Pacific Island nations, including New Zealand. Marine life is endangered due to rising sea temperatures, and it is also a direct threat to the survival of people living in Pacific regions who depend heavily on fishing and marine resources. Because children are likely to be the biggest victims of climate change, an urgent response is needed to protect future generations.
Panelists and participants actively participated in the discussion and presented a number of practical solutions and countermeasures needed to address climate change. It was also suggested that specific discussions are needed regarding the role of the New Zealand government and everyday citizens with concerns about climate change. The audience also had the opportunity to reflect on their own role in taking action to mitigate climate change.
The participants thanked HWPL for planning and leading the seminar and said that they look forward to continuing to work with HWPL in the future. They acknowledged that the gathering helped raise awareness about the impact of climate change on human rights, and hope to spread the message of peace and practical climate action more widely throughout New Zealand and other Pacific Island nations.
