A New Era of Education: Peace and Wellness at St Albans Secondary

In an inspiring initiative, HWPL Victoria Branch, in partnership with Acts of Random Kindness Victoria Inc. (ARK VIC), has successfully delivered a series of Peace Education workshops at St Albans Secondary College. From July 16 to August 14, the program engaged Year 8 students in 20 dynamic sessions that integrated peace education with physical education. Designed to promote self-worth, community responsibility, and proactive conflict resolution, the workshops were a resounding success, receiving glowing feedback from both students and educators.

Previously in June, HWPL also collaborated with ARK VIC and conducted peace education workshops in Yirara College and Centralian Middle School in Alice Springs, Central Australia. In Term 3 of 2024, HWPL has started their Peace Education workshop in West Melbourne, starting with St Albans Secondary College.

Janet McKenzie, Assistant Principal of St Albans Secondary College, praised the program which has impacted more than 180 students: “The Peace Education workshops have been transformative for our students. The integration of creative games and sports has made the lessons engaging and impactful. We’ve seen a significant improvement in student confidence and their willingness to engage positively with their peers.”

The physical education teachers were equally enthusiastic. Mr. Simon Lynch remarked, “The workshops have brought a fresh perspective to our curriculum. The students are not only learning about peace and respect but are also developing critical thinking and leadership skills.” Ms. Felicity Diallo added, “It’s been wonderful to see the students so actively involved and applying what they’ve learned to their daily interactions.”

HWPL’s collaboration with ARK VIC has been a key factor in the program’s success. ARK VIC, a dedicated community organization, focuses on promoting health and wellbeing through sport and educational programs. With a vision to combat loneliness and mental health issues, ARK VIC’s mission aligns seamlessly with HWPL’s goals of fostering peace and harmony. The success at St Albans Secondary College highlights the potential for Peace Education to be implemented in schools across Victoria.
