IPYG’s Peace Tree-Planting Campaign and Peace Walk in Bayangol, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
On May 23, International Peace Youth Group (IPYG) hosted an event for HWPL’s 11th Annual Commemoration of the Declaration of World Peace and Peace Walk at Bayangol Agricultural Park in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Under the theme, “Youth’s Unity – Green Gateway,” the event featured a tree-planting campaign, encouraging widespread community participation.
Mongolia ranks among the nations most affected by global warming and climate change. Over the last 80 years, the nation’s temperature has risen by 2.25°C—approximately 2.2 times the global average—while annual precipitation has declined by 7%. Additionally, 76.9% of Mongolia’s land area is now affected by desertification. Projections by the Mongolian Meteorological Agency indicate that by 2050, the country will face significant challenges in adapting to these climate shifts.
In light of these developments, President Ukhnaagiin Khürelsükh of Mongolia has underscored afforestation as the most effective measure to combat desertification. He announced, “To contribute to the global fight against climate change, Mongolia will launch a campaign to plant one billion trees by 2030.” In alignment with this national effort, HWPL has pledged to support Mongolia’s afforestation campaign by planting 100,000 trees by 2030. This commitment is part of HWPL’s Peace Tree Planting Project, initiated in 2023 in collaboration with civil society, aiming to address climate change and protect ecosystems.
IPYG has been planting more than 800 trees in different areas such as Bayangol Agricultural Park, Botanic Garden, Ger Zone, etc., along with 200 volunteers. The tree-planting work was able to be carried out in cooperation with the Youth Empowerment Workshop (YEPW).
One of the participants, Chimed Badrakh, a biology professor at ECO Asia University, expressed that he is looking forward to seeing the progress made through HWPL’s tree-planting campaign. “At a time when Mongolia is experiencing desertification, the Billion Tree Movement implemented by the government is a very timely activity and I am very happy that the youth are joining it. Personally, I am happy that IPYG is launching a campaign to plant trees by calling on young people. All the young people who have come here should actively participate in the activities of the HWPL organization in the future.”
The branch director of HWPL Mongolia said, “The tree-planting campaign started at the beginning of May and will continue until the end of the year to plant 3,000 trees in total and they will be managed continuously. So we hope to conduct these peace initiatives more actively for the local community and the citizens.”
